Research the backgrounds of the shelters you consider. Find out if the shelter is part of a local, national, or international entity, with any affiliations. If it involves a refuge for battered women, inquire about confidentiality policies, support, and social work intervention. If you want to adopt an animal, get all the specifics in writing, including fee, shots and vaccinations, adoption certificates, and compatibility with family and children.
